Wellcome to the Government-Wharf Marlow web site
The Government-Wharf is situated on the Hawkesbury river at the north western end of Marlow. Built in 1889 to provide a storage and transportation hub for local farmers and residents of the local area. The instalation of a government shed for local farmers once again providing a life line for the many water bound residents of the area. Being able to be servised by the many river traders and being able to send their produce to Sydney in a fresh condition by means of river boat traders saved Sydney from starvation in the early years. Also being a reliable transportation hub enabled residents to travel to Sydney in a two day period was so much better than a week on a horse or cart. So the restoration of the Government wharf has granted the river bound residents the tradional tansportation hub that was once so vital . Having access to the largest stone wharf on the Hawkesbury River has enabled so many land locked communities to transport goods and persons to their destinations .Long may it continue. |
