The History behind the Association
In 1998 a group of local residents embarked on a project to stop the deterioation of the historic Government-Wharf. The deterioation of the wharf was of a major concern to us as the erosion from the wharf during floods and spring tides was serverly impacting on the surrounding foreshore area.
The Association starts work
The first job that was undertaken was to stop any further deterioation of the wharf. This involved retaining what was left of the existing wharf. The next step was to recover as many of the original stone blocks as possible. We managed to do this on the very low tides in the spring of 1998,with the help of many of the associations members and a crane truck. We recovered enough stone to rebuild one whole side of the wharf and half the front. Larger stones were then placed on the unfinished side of the wharf to minimize the chances of all the new work being washed back into the river. During this time we also managed to clean up the surrounding area which must have been used as the local tip for years.Moving 1.5 tons of asbestos, roofing iron, wheels, tyres, you name it we moved it.We then chained a wheelie bin to a pole and then spent the next 2 years training people how to use it.Once the parking area was cleared of the locals rubbish and demolished house rufuse the association managed to have desent turn around for emergencey vechicals and be able to park cars there without hindering other wharf users ..
